Reminder: Nationwide Post Budget Events 2018

Each year Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) provides child-focused analysis and commentary of the budget. The aim is to provide an accessible and affordable avenue for the community to come together and hear about how the budget affects children and young people, especially our most vulnerable who live in poverty.

Guest Speakers

Dr Stephen Poletti
Dr Stephen Poletti is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Auckland. He holds a PhD in Mathematical Physics (Newcastle upon Tyne, 1991) and Economics. Steve’s work includes teaching and research in Australia and New Zealand and he has published widely on economics as well as physics.

Dr Rhys Jones
Dr Rhys Jones (Ngāti Kahungunu) is a Public Health Medicine Specialist and senior lecturer in Māori Health at the University of Auckland. A father of three boys, Rhys’ research interests include ethnic health inequities, the role of health professional education in advancing indigenous health, and environmental influences on Māori health.

Prof Innes Asher Innes is a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Auckland, a paediatrician at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland and CPAG’s health spokesperson. She chairs the Global Asthma Network. In recognition of her work. Innes was appointed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to their inaugural Expert Panel on Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in 2017.

Guest Speakers

Len Cook (CBE)
Currently New Zealand’s Families Commissioner, Len Cook was formerly New Zealand’s Government Statistician from 1992 to 2000, and the UK’s National Statistician from 2000 to 2005. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Social Policy in 1987-88. He is chair of the board of Superu, and a member of the Remuneration Authority. Len’s prime interests include public administration, population change and public policy, official statistics and the place of science in policy. He regularly works with official statisticians in the Pacific. He was appointed Families Commissioner in July 2015.

Honorary Associate Professor Susan St John
Susan is a founding member of CPAG and is currently a spokesperson for CPAG on economics and incomes, as well as a researcher. She is an Honorary Associate Professor in the Economics Department, University of Auckland and the director of the Retirement Policy and Research Centre. Susan has contributed to a wide range of CPAG publications including the Human Rights Appeal Case.

Jane Higgins
Jane is on the Proprietor’s Board of Villa Maria College. She has a background in academia and works in community-based research and evaluation with government agencies and community development organisations. Her research speciality is youth in transition. She is also the author of two young adult novels.

Paul Dalziel – Children and the Budget
Paul is Professor of Economics at Lincoln University and Deputy Director of its Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit at Lincoln University. Paul has more than 25 years experience in researching themes on New Zealand economic and social policy. He has published nine books on New Zealand economic policy and received awards for his excellence in university teaching and research.

Lucy D’Aeth – Children and Mental Wellbeing Promotion
Lucy works as a public health specialist for the Canterbury District Health Board. She has worked in community development and health promotion for over 30 years, mostly in Christchurch but also in London, East Kent and Geneva. Since the Canterbury earthquakes 2010-11, much of Lucy’s work has focused on community recovery and she is part of the leadership of the All Right? wellbeing promotion campaign.

Christina McKerchar – Children and Healthy Food Environments

Christina McKerchar is of Ngāti Kahungunu, Tuhoe and Ngāti Porou descent. She is a lecturer in Māori Health at the University of Otago and a nutritionist. Christina is completing a PhD about food availability for Māori children and whether the right to healthy food realised for Māori children in their lived environments. The first part of her thesis analyses data from the ‘KidsCam’ study to explore the lived environments of 11 year old children in Wellington.
