Dear Joan,

In times of crisis, we come together to show the world what we stand for.

Leaders around the world around the world are acting quickly to increase help to the millions of people who have been displaced by war or persecution. Germany alone expects to welcome 800,000 refugees and asylum seekers this year.

And, in New Zealand, we have been so inspired by the outpouring of support. 750 Syrian children, women and men will have the chance of a safe future in New Zealand because people like you took action – signing our petition, emailing the Minister or the Prime Minister, organising spontaneous marches to Parliament, pledging to open your own home to a refugee, or signing on as donors or volunteers. After months of campaigning, your voice has been heard.

This is an important and overdue first step, but our work isn’t over. Not being able to help millions is no excuse for not helping hundreds. Our own refugee quota has not changed in nearly 30 years and sits at 90th in the world per capita. It’s a record that none of us can be proud of. Now is the time to act to ensure a permanent solution, not just a one off increase.

Join us Thursday 6 pm as we show that New Zealand is Open to Refugees.

Other events throughout the country will be posted here:

We will gather to observe a few moment of silence for the 60 million refugees worldwide and will light 750 candles for the 750 more refugees who would benefit from doubling the quota.

As our favourite adage goes, "It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." Please join us, or host an event with your friends and family, and post it online with the hashtag #RefugeesWelcomeNZ.

Together, we are powerful.
