A just and fair way to deal with drug use is within our grasp. Big changes are already underway that mean drug use is now seen as a health issue, not a criminal one. There is more work to undo the damage of a 40-year war on drugs.

People who have been convicted have paid a very high price. Job opportunities, education, whānau relationships and health have all been affected for tens of thousands of New Zealanders. Our racist drug law has led to a disproportionate number of Māori being unfairly caught up in the system. It’s not just drug law but the whole of criminal justice that needs to change.

We cannot let this all to rare opportunity slip by. It will take us working together to make things stick.
