| Momentum is building across the country to double the refugee quota, and to harness all that energy we’re helping to organise a nationwide tour with Murdoch from Doing Our Bit to speak to why doubling the quota is so important.
Over the course of the next few months the Government is likely to decide whether the quota will be doubled. Pressure is building on the Government to increase the number of refugees New Zealand receives annually. On Monday, Marianne, ActionStation’s National Director, joined others including Anglican Archbishop Philip Richardson, Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, New Zealand Red Cross and former refugees to present to a public hearing on New Zealand’s refugee quota organised by Amnesty International and sponsored by Peter Dunne. Speaker after speaker at the hearing urged the Government to increase the quota and voiced their willingness to provide resources and support to ensure those additional refugees were successfully resettled in New Zealand.
Now we need to take our voices wider. We need to go to universities, churches, and community centres across New Zealand to tell the story of how a compassionate country looks after those who need a home. That’s why we’re helping to bring together a nationwide tourwith Murdoch from Doing Our Bit. At the events there’ll be a discussion of the review of New Zealand’s refugee quota and more information about how you can get more involved. So get along to your local one.
