State housing is a system of public housing in New Zealand and for more than three generations low-income families have been renting state homes. Now the government is selling off a third of its stock. Set in New Zealand’s

state house neighbourhood Glen Innes, an eastern suburb of Auckland, and Kaitaia, a poor rural area in the Far North, "A place to call home" documents the destruction of one community and the birth of another.

Poor Kiwi kids should not have to rely on charity to get ahead at school John O’Neill

A recent New Zealand Herald article showed how children and their families in the Manaiakalani Education Trust cluster of low-decile schools are benefitting from philanthropic funding to provide low-cost digital technology and learning opportunities they simply could not otherwise afford. The story is inspiring and heartwarming. It appears to be making a real difference to these children’s and parents’ lives.

What do decile ratings tell us? John O’Neill

Over the last couple of years, the Minister of Education has regularly been reported as stating that the decile rating and funding systems are ‘well-intentioned but clumsy’. This may be true of the decile funding system (which is politically driven). It is not true of the decile rating system (which is evidence-based). It is important not to confuse the two.

We would like to acknowledge some of our generous supporters and fundraisers who have made donations towards our work in the last few months. We are continually humbled by each individual and groups generosity when choosing to help fund our research, education and advocacy in working towards eliminating child poverty.

We would like to thank all the puppeteers who performed in the Out of the Suitcase Puppet Festival (Oct 1- 5th, Island Bay, Wellington) as they donated 10% of their proceeds from ticket sales to CPAG. The Puppet Festival was organized by Anna Bailey, Ray Beals, Norbert Hausberg, Leda Farrow and Rose Beauchamp. We would like to thank a class from James Cook High School for holding a fundraiser and donating the profits to CPAG. Wellington High School kindly donated to CPAG after having a speaker come and talk to their school. We have also received some wonderful donations from anonymous individuals whose support we greatly appreciate.
