In The Eye Of The Storm: Disaster Politics & Climate Change In The Philippines

October Speaking Tour By Efleda Bautista Of People Surge

Friends,

Dr Efleda Bautista is touring New Zealand on behalf of People Surge, representing the victims of the biggest storm to make landfall in recorded history – namely Typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda in the Philippines) which killed thousands and did huge damage in 2013.

Of all the disasters, natural and manmade, in recent Philippine history, this is the one which attracted the greatest response from the NZ public and media.

There are obvious commonalities between what happened in the Philippines in 2013 and what happened in Canterbury and Christchurch in 2010/11.

Both Filipinos and New Zealanders face the problems caused by manmade climate change; and New Zealanders (specifically Cantabrians) have current bitter experience of disaster politics.

Please see the attached poster for details of her public meetings in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

The tour is being collectively organised by several groups. And it costs money.
