Peace Workshops and Poets for Peace, 18 and 19 April 2015

The 2015 National Peace Workshops ‘Remembering war / ending war: Challenging militarism and building peace’, will be held in Wellington on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April 2015, organised by Peace Movement Aotearoa in conjunction with hosts St Andrew’s on the Terrace. The programme includes an interesting and participatory mix of speaker and presentation plenary sessions, workshops, a ‘Poets for Peace’ evening, stalls with peace resources, and more.

The peace workshops open on Saturday morning with two presentations: ‘Remembering WW1 in the context of ongoing militarism’ by Edwina Hughes, Peace Movement Aotearoa; and ‘Challenging militarism and building peace in the Pacific’, by Dr Pala Molisa, Lecturer, Victoria University. Workshops on Saturday afternoon include the opportunity to learn about compassionate nonviolent communication with Sophia Tara, Director, Compassionate Communication Centre; a writing workshop ‘how to write a peace poem’ with Teresia Teaiwa, poet and writer; a discussion on men, masculinity and militarism with Pala Molisa; and a chance to learn about ukuleles for peace, to strum (beginners welcome) or sing along with Mighty Ukes for Peace.

‘Poets for Peace’ is on Saturday night, an evening of poetry featuring * Teresia Teaiwa * Maria MacMillan * Janis Freegard * Sophia Tara * Ali Jacs * Martin de Jong * Meg Hartfield * Vivienne Plumb * Tim Jones * Madeleine Slavik * and more, with a musical interlude by Mighty Ukes for Peace. There are two sessions on Sunday afternoon: ‘Churches challenging militarism and building peace’ with panelists Stephanie du Fresne, Quaker Peace and Service; Bishop Richard Randerson, Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia; Rev Jenny Dawson, Christian World Service; Paul Barber, NZ Council of Christian Social Services; and Lisa Beech, Advocacy and Research Manager, Caritas, and discussion; followed by the closing session ‘Make peace not war’ with reflections by weekend speakers, panelists and participants.
