‘Towards a just peace for Israel/Palestine’. Dr. Jeff Halper has been a peace and human rights activist for more than three decades. Born in Minnesota in the United States, he participated in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements of the 1960s. Halper immigrated to Israel in 1973 after attending rabbinical school and resisting military service in the Vietnam War. In Israel, Halper taught anthropology at Haifa and Ben-Gurion Universities. His academic research has focused on the history of Jerusalem in the modern era, contemporary Israeli culture, and the Middle East conflict. He is the author of Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century. During his mandatory Israeli military service, he refused to bear arms or serve in the occupied Palestinian territories. In 1997, Halper co-founded the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions (ICAHD) to challenge and resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes.

Calling all concerned citizens!

On September 1st 2013 there will be nationwide rallies which will unite Kiwis who are concerned about the loss of democracy occurring in New Zealand.

This is made clear in the government’s handling of the GCSB bill.

Foreign control, corporate takeover of education, asset sales, GE food, health, pesticides, unsustainable farming, destructive mining, and the TPPA all have the common theme of destroying our future.

We need to reduce the influence of corporate greed in NZ, and actively encourage democracy and sovereignty by promoting awareness of what is going on.

You may chose to bring pots and pans to bang, as in Iceland, or blow whistles to support whistle blowers as per Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning.

Auckland March and Rally Sept 1st. Gather at Britomart at 2pm for a march at 2.30. Walk to Albert Park via Wellesley St and Princes St.

Gather at the band rotunda for speeches and music.

Callout for action and solidarity- Stop The Summit, rise up for climate justice and a fossil free future! Sept 18 & 19

Kia Ora Koutou,

Next month on the 18th and 19th September the Petroleum Summit is set to take place in Wellington.

Our oceans are being sold off, seismic surveying is set to take place in the Pegasus Basin and exploratory drilling in the Great South Basin and off Taranaki within months, onshore oil and gas production including fracking is expanding and our right to protest and privacy is being removed.

This Petroleum summit comes at a time when our climate, livelihoods and environment are being threatened like never before.

With representatives from the oil and gas industry and Government coming together for two days with the purpose of the expansion of this destructive and unsustainable industry, now is the time to act. Now is the time for us rise up and voice a collective NO to fossil fuel extraction agenda, and YES to a sustainable and equitable future.

Therefore, we are calling for action and solidarity from our allies around Aotearoa to join us in Wellington to stop this summit from it’s business as usual.

With the industry behind this summit threatening our future, and with summit sponsors such as war-mongering corporate giant Halliburton, we hope that groups and allies in peace and social justice movements will also join in this action.

We will meet on Wednesday 18th at 7.15am sharp outside the Railway Station (next to the Gandhi statue) and march to the Petroleum summit at Westpac Stadium. We will voice our opposition powerfully, creatively,and peacefully. We know it’s early, but we’ll have coffee on hand. Please be on time so we can march together.

Bring banners, noisemakers, whistles, pots, pans, costumes, musical instruments, friends, whanau and anything else to help make this event lively and festive.

They began to be created in Chile by the families of the victims of the dictatorship, and since then they have served as an expression of different struggles in different contexts and continents. This event will include a cocktail, music, poetry and dance, and will also mark the anniversary of the 40 years of the coup d’état by Pinochet in Chile. Witness a people’s revolution in action. The Australia-Venezuela Solidarity Network’s 14th international solidarity brigade to Venezuela this December is a very special opportunity to observe, learn about and be inspired by the Bolivarian revolution that is transforming Latin America and challenging the greed and exploitation of global capitalism by showing that a better world is possible. Since 1998, when the late Hugo Chavez was first elected president, the Bolivarian revolution has achieved remarkable things by putting control of Venezuela’s politics and economy back into the hands of the poor majority. Despite the challenges created by Chavez’s death last March and the right-wing’s campaign to undermine new President Nicolas Maduro, this people-power driven revolution continues to flourish and defy all attempts by the imperialism-backed opposition to destroy it.
Brigade registration and costs: The registration deadline for the 2013 brigade is September 1, 2013. Accommodation, transport within Venezuela and English-Spanish translation throughout the brigade will be organised for all participants by the AVSN. Participants will need to book their own international airfares. Please do not purchase your tickets before the registration deadline of September 1. In addition to your international airfare, you will need to budget for approximately $1200.
