ACC: A Better Future: A Conference to Develop a New and Lasting Framework for our Accident Compensation Scheme. The full programme is here. ACC has been subject to considerable criticism in recent years over such matters as its alleged culture of disentitlement and its inability to manage the privacy of claimants. In the wake of all this the Minister has referred to the need to restore public trust in the scheme and has put in place a new service and purchase agreement with ACC, which is intended to make a start on this lengthy and difficult road.

The ACC Futures Coalition has organised this conference to assist the development of a new and positive agenda for ACC, to help restore integrity and trust in the scheme and put it on a sustainable footing where it is not subject to constant political fiddling by successive governments. http://issues.co.nz/accfutures/Events

2012 Jesson Lecture. This year’s Bruce Jesson Lecture will focus on New Zealand’s need for investigative journalism – by someone once described as “New Zealand’s leading investigative journalist”. Nicky Hager, who will present the lecture at Auckland University on 31 October, has been a fulltime writer for more than 20 years and is the sole New Zealand member of the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

THEATRE – DRAMA – REALPOLITIC: New Zealand will host the next round of Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement negotiations in Auckland from 3rd to 12th December 2012. “Having the negotiations on our doorstep will help focus attention on what is probably the most far-reaching executive lawmaking New Zealand has ever seen”, says Dr Jane Kelsey, a strong critic of the proposed agreement. The campaign is underway to get the word out through creative media on the implications of this so-called “Trade Agreement” and Theatres of Resistance is part of that campaign. You might say we got it started, with Professor Kelsey, speaking on TPPA as a Star of our launch into Political Theatre in 2010. And Jane will be with us again on November 3rd at Artworks Theatre, putting us in the big picture of the International Corporate Take-Over. And on our own door-step/foreshore we have the Wharetana Bay Action Group who will give us an up-date on the on-going saga of the Take-over of our Heritage and Beaches. Theatres of Resistance has developed a presentation format of Music, Poetry and Film with active Participation from the audience in discussion with our speakers. REMEMBER WAIHI 9-11 NOV 2012. It will be the 1912 Waihi Gold Miners’ Strike Centenary and Commemoration of the death of Fred Evans. The phrase “Remember Waihi” was used for many years by the union movement to refer to the 1912 Waihi strike. It expressed anger at the death of striker Fred Evans, who was beaten by death by strikebreakers while the police stood by. It also expressed caution at confronting the combined might of the government, big employers and the police. The Labour History Project is remembering Waihi with a weekend-long historical seminar and memorial service in Waihi this November. It’s one of the ways we research, record and celebrate New Zealanders’ working lives, and draw on the past for inspiration and guidance for the future.
