An IRD report commissioned by the government last month showed that the 311 wealthiest families in this country hold $85 billion between them, and pay significantly lower tax rates than ordinary households. Yet on May 18, the Labour Government will be announcing their Budget for 2023, and in spite of the report that they commissioned, in spite of the economic crisis which is hitting Aotearoa, and in spite of the climate crisis which is devastating communities across the country, Hipkins has ruled out any new or increased taxes on the rich.
This Budget will not be enough for workers or for the environment. We need an alternative budget that will increase spending to tackle inequality, the housing crisis and the climate crisis. To do so, taxes on the ultra-wealthy have to go up. The alternative is austerity. With their spending bonfire announced in March, Labour are already going down the latter route. They are cutting climate funding during a climate crisis.
Join System Change Aotearoa for a public meeting on what a Budget for People and Planet would look like, and why we need to tax the rich to pay for it.
