This message has the details of the Welfare or Warfare? Militarism, Peace and Planet public meetings next week in Nelson and Golden Bay, and some information if you or your group would like to organise a meeting with the presentation in your area.

About Militarism, Peace and Planet: The presentation begins with a brief overview of key developments in each of the humanitarian disarmament campaigns Peace Movement Aotearoa provides national coordination for – Aotearoa New Zealand Campaign on Military Spending, Aotearoa New Zealand Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, Aotearoa New Zealand Joint Working Group on Landmines and Cluster Munitions, and iCAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Aotearoa New Zealand – as well as some of our peace projects, such as White Poppies for Peace, White Poppy Peace Scholarships, and the World War One Centenary Peace Project.

The main focus is on the costs and consequences of militarisation in times of peace, globally and in Aotearoa New Zealand, in relation to social justice, the environment, climate change, attitudes towards violence as a means of resolving conflict, and the increasing level of militarisation of children and their education here. There are optional sections depending on the focus of the group organising the public meeting, for example, a section on militarism and human rights or on peace and faith groups’ collaboration can be included, and the overall presentation can be customised to reflect the topics you are most interested in, for example, climate justice, militarisation of children and their education or any of the national humanitarian disarmament campaigns. If you would like to organise a Militarism, Peace and Planet meeting, please contact Peace Movement Aotearoa email pma to discuss, thank you.
