Kia ora Peace Friends,

Around the globe we are seeing a rise in racism, xenophobia and white supremacy that is both fueled by and fueling the new US administration. At the same time, highly crafted propaganda wars and counterintelligence programs are being run across the internet and mainstream media that distort reality and truth, replacing them with “alternative facts” that suit the agendas of those in power. It can be hard to stay optimistic and motivated in such dark times. There is a remedy for this despair: it is activism, and it works. Getting out on the streets and working together collectively, face-to-face can provide profound reassurance that we can and will make another kind of world. We hope you can get along to participate in some of these events to build local connections, and to work for peace, justice and self-determination for all of the world’s people.

Stand to Stop Niki’s Eviction
Tuesday 21 February, from 9am onwards
14 Taniwha Street, Glen Innes
The Tamaki Regeneration Company are attempting to evict the elderly Niki Rauti from her long-term home to progress a gentrification project. Housing NZ have offered her temporary accommodation in a house with stairs she can’t use. Whilst spending $20 billion on new weapons this government has been running down the already inadequate and dysfunctional state housing system and systematically destroying the Glen Innes community. Niki along with many other inspiring activists have been occupying her home and successfully resisting an unjust eviction. Join us on February 21st to stop Niki’s eviction.

Crafting Resistance Ōtāhuhu
Sunday, 12 March 12:30pm
Join Auckland Peace Action for another Crafting Resistance event. The last one was jammed packed with people, so we’re taking it south so some more people can join in. This is a hands-on creative workshop exploring the ways in which communities use arts and crafts to resist injustice, torture and terrorising by state forces. Crafting materials and light refreshments provided. Camila from Chile will be teaching participants about a technique called Arpillera, a type of patchwork quilting born during the Pinochet dictatorship when a lot of women started sewing images of what they were experiencing. More details about this on our facebook page and Twitter in the next couple of weeks.
