10,000 TOO MANY: March against mass incarceration and prison expansion!

"March against mass incarceration: 10,000 Too Many":

Saturday 11 February 12 noon – Queen Street

The New Zealand prison population has just reached a record high of 10,000 people. This is largely because of new “tough on crime” bills such as the Bail Amendment Act, which put hundreds more people in prison before even being found guilty of anything. Despite the growing evidence that prisons don’t keep communities safe, the New Zealand government plans to spend $1 billion on prison construction in the coming years, including a new wing at Waikeria Prison to house 1,500 more prisoners. Instead of reducing the number of people inside by dealing with the fundamental problems in society like inequality and racism, the government locks people up to hide the problems of poverty, homelessness, drug abuse and mental illness. Prisons are not an answer to social problems. They make those problems worse by exposing prisoners to hunger, fear, assault and isolation from their communities. Action is needed now to bring the crisis of mass incarceration to an end. Please join us on the streets to demand the repeal of the Bail Amendment Act, an end to new prison construction, and the creation of real justice for all! Your urgent action is needed.
