Invite: Tāmaki Community Public Meeting

Kia ora tatou katoa,

On behalf of the Tāmaki Housing Group, a collective of directly affected state housing tenants in Glen Innes, we would like to invite you to our public meeting on the 14th June, 6.30pm at Glen Innes School.

On April 1st of this year, 2,800 state homes in Tāmaki (Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure) were transferred to the Tāmaki Redevelopment Company, and the tenancies transferred to a subsidiary Tāmaki Housing Association from Housing New Zealand. These transfers are a part of the government’s social housing reforms which involve the transfer of state housing from the public to a private social housing market, a policy which has failed internationally.

The Tāmaki area has been at the forefront of the government’s so-called "solutions" to the housing crisis which have involved the subsidised sale of public land to private developers, and the transfer of tenancy of state houses to private organisations in a bid to rid the government’s role in providing affordable and safe housing for low-income people.

This public meeting has been called to discuss the impact that the transfer of our state homes to the Tāmaki Housing Association has had and will have on our communities. In light of the uncertainties that we have been placed in, fearing market rents, bonds, confusion about the interface between Work and Income and our new landlords, evictions, our fate of potential housing instability – we do not know what the long term impacts of these transfers are, and more broadly the government’s social housing plans in Tāmaki which is the experiment for the rest of New Zealand, but we do know that we need to come together to find solutions for ourselves and defend our community from the gentrification and privatisation, and ultimately, from the impacts it has on our families.

There will be an open floor for community members and those affected to voice their experiences, concerns and questions, and a short film shown about the transfers in Tāmaki. Please come join us for a cup of tea and a hearty kōrero.

Tuesday 14th June, 6.30 – 8.30pm
