Rally outside the Waikato Regional Council

Since November last year community group Protect Karangahake have been asking the Waikato Regional Council to take steps towards ensuring the beautiful Waitawheta and Ohinemuri rivers are not endangered by requiring New Talisman Gold Mines to apply for a water discharge consent. Waikato Regional Council have previously given the mining company a water take consent and said they do not need a water discharge consent. But in November the Council were given evidence from Dr Chris Hendy (ex Assoc Professor of Environmental Chemistry who has studied the Talisman mine) to show that New Talisman’s planned activities will in fact cause acid mine drainage to leach in the rivers. They then said the concerns would be assessed early to mid February but they are yet to give a substantive response.

This has gone on too long and Protect Karangahake need answers in order to further their campaign through the High Court.

If you can, please join them at 8.30am this Thursday (19th March) on the corner of Grey St and Cook St to help deliver their petition and message that water is more precious than gold and Waikato Regional Council need to step up and take responsibility!

Here is a link to the facebook page – please share it far and wide and invite all you can. The bigger the crowd the louder the message.

If you want to come but need a ride or if you have spare seats to offer lifts to others please get in touch.

All the best,

Ruby

Even Wall Street knows water is more precious than gold! (article)
If you haven’t yet please sign the petition calling the Waikato Regional Council to protect the lands and waters of the Karangahake Gorge from the toxic mining industry.
And it’s not just us here in Aotearoa working to protect our water sources from the toxic gold mining industry. This is the story of a community in Peru in the same fight as us.
