CPAG Hikoi for children. Join Child Poverty Action Group in a hikoi for children on Saturday 6th September, at 11am in Auckland (and hopefully some other places too!) This is going to be a really positive, fun event to show the energy and passion of all the people in New Zealand committed to giving children the best possible start in life. Whangamata Walk Run Festival & Parakiwai Walk
Next Saturday is the annual Whangamata Walk Run Festival and Watchdog invites you to join us in Whangamata to help raise awareness by running/ walking in your Coromandel No Mining Tshirt.


The Walk Run festival promises to be a fun day and great opportunity for us to spread raise awareness in this community which has extensive exploration permits behind it. You can check out the website here to register. If you do come make sure to come visit us at our stall.
 

The next day, Sunday 7th, we will also be taking hike into the stunning Parakiwai Valley where the mining permit lies.

 Meet at 10am at the end of Parakiwai Quarry rd and bring your hiking boots, lunch and come check out the waterfalls and more beautiful pools like the one pictured below.

Child Poverty Action Group launches CPAG’s 2014 flagship publication "Our Children, Our Choice: Priorities for Policy" with a special focus on incomes. Speakers: Susan St John (QSO): Joint editor of Our Children, Our Choice and CPAG’s economics spokesperson. Susan also co-authored the report’s chapter on incomes. And Fa’anana Efeso Collins: Member of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board, Auckland City Council. Efeso is well known for his work with Pasifika youth and is an outspoken social commentator and broadcaster. Plus comments from other contributing authors followed by discussion. Just a reminder that we have another two sessions in our series of talks “But is it Fair?” on Faith Communities & Social Justice. The final two talks will be held on Tuesdays 9th & 16th September 7-8.30pm. Session 2 (9th Sept) with Lyn Smith will focus on social justice and its implications for Catholic schools. Session 3 (16th Sept) with Helen Bergin will look at fairness in the Christian tradition especially through a Dominican lens. Each presenter will provide an introduction to their topic for about 20-30 mins and then open the issue up for discussion. It would greatly help the discussion if those attending have access to the book "But it is Fair? Faith communities and social justice" edited by Neil Darragh. Social justice in communities – What is it? How can we build it? How can we sustain it? A conference jointly hosted by Community Networks Aotearoa (formerly NZCOSS) and the NZ Council of Christian Social Services. Social justice is vitally important in Christchurch as it is rebuilding and redeveloping; it is equally important in all of our communities. It does not happen by accident but is the result of deliberate and inclusive decision-making. Inspirational speakers from Christchurch, elsewhere in New Zealand and Australia will share their experiences in working within communities to bring about self-determination, inclusion and empowerment for community members. This conference will strengthen participants’ commitment to social justice, it will inform them of how socially just communities have been developed and will inspire them to work towards this ideal in their work and communities. HEADS UP – NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2014. Why? The TPPA leaders are expected to meet during the next week. Obama said he wanted an outcome to present to the world. Kiwis need to say ‘NO TO TPPA!!!’ in even bigger numbers and more places than the massive mobilisation in March. More details in the next few bulletins. Lock your whiskey cabinet and grab your guns, because your friends and ours The Bacchanals are bringing an all-new, all-improved, all-singing-all-milking production of Once We Built A Tower to the South Island! We are SO EXCITED to be giving this play another outing, and SO EXCITED to be coming to some places that feature prominently in the story of how the 1935 Labour Government used the medical insurance scheme at the Waitaki Dam as their basis for creating a Welfare State that was once the envy of the world. Brought to you with the wonderful support of Emerging Artists Trust Wellington, Interislander and Coffee Supreme (and hopefully several more sponsors who can’t be confirmed at the time of this website update!), Once We Built A Tower will play a different town every night for a fortnight beginning Monday 25 August.

On MONDAY 25 AUGUST we will be in ASHBURTON at the Sinclair Centre, 74 Park Street!

On TUESDAY 26 AUGUST we will be in TIMARU at the Caroline Bay Community Lounge!

All performances begin at 7pm! We are very, very committed to this idea that theatre should be accessible to ALL and that you shouldn’t miss out on live performance just because you don’t live in a major city. To that end, WE ARE NOT CHARGING ADMISSION. (You can & probably should give us koha or a donation because god knows how we’re going to make up the balance of the $25,000 this tour is costing us. And tell your rich friends that if they want to give money to a worthy cause, they should throw some pictures of the Queen our way!) We want you to come on down, see a free play, have a cup of tea (or maybe a wine/beer/cider/absinthe) with us after and let us sing you songs and tell you tales of NZ local history!
