In two days we will be celebrating the signing in of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York City. The historic significance of this election was captured beautifully in this article from A US Socialist magazine La Lucha/The Struggle: “Zohran Mamdani: From postcolonial legacy to the heart of empire”.
He is being “sworn in” as Mayor by the working-class socialist leader Bernie Sanders at a mass event in New York City starting at 7am on Friday New Zealand time – I’ll be getting up to watch.

Another huge victory was that of a militant socialist getting 63% of the vote in Ireland’s presidential election. One of her campaign team explains how here: “How Catherine Connolly Won Ireland’s Presidential Election”
The best explanation of the ongoing crisis in Chile, the recent election of a far right candidate as President, and lessons for the left is this one I received recently: “Reform Without Power Chile’s Parliamentary Left from Allende to Boric”
A party with origins in the Maoist left that had made itself into a mass working class left alternative in Belgium (and 10% of the vote) that gives some real hope: “Peter Mertens: “Don’t be afraid, seize the opportunities of 2026 with both hands”
Why the UN-endorsed Palestine peace deal was not a victory for colonial rule as my good friends at Tricontinental tried to argue. “Palestinian factions have come together to thwart Israeli plans in Gaza, for now”
The coming economic crises that will strike capitalism over the next few years are best explained by Gary Wilson at La Lucha/the Struggle. I am working with Gary to produce a book on why capitalism must have crises. Two recent articles are dealing with AI and bubble economics:
“War money, tech profits: The real history of Artificial Intelligence”
