Robert Wade event this Thursday evening

The LSE’s Robert Wade, who many of you will remember from his popular lectures in 2013, is speaking in Wellington this Thursday, 5.30pm at the Royal Society in Thorndon, in conversation with Dr Geoff Bertram and myself.

We’ll be talking about wealth, income, inequality and the global forces underlying all these issues. It’s a public event organised by my publisher, Bridget Williams Books, and all are welcome, so please do come along.

For those in Auckland, Prof Wade will also be speaking at a special lunch at Ika restaurant on Wednesday, December 2. See here for details.

Also for Wellingtonians, I’m speaking this afternoon at the Treasury with VUW’s Lisa Marriott, on the subject of ‘Inequality: Is Privilege the Problem?’ We’ll be arguing that any attempts to understand poverty will be limited unless one also looks at the role of wealth and power.

It’s a promising sign that the Treasury is open to these discussions. For those not in Wellington, I’ll write up the key points of the talk – and the reaction from the Treasury – for a future newsletter.

Finally, I had a piece in the Guardian yesterday setting out why we should talk more about wealth. Entitled ‘New Zealanders need to share our common wealth. Let’s start by discussing inequality’, it comes off the back of my most recent book, Wealth and New Zealand.
