In collaboration with Massey University, Sir Hew Strachan will be speaking at Te Manawa on the 27th of August. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear a speaker of this caliber. One of Britain’s most respected military advisors, who recently criticised the British and United States government’s strategy in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, will share his views on the First World War in an international conference here in August. Sir Hew Strachan – Chichele Professor of the History of War at Oxford University who has advised the Coalition on its treatment of the Armed Forces and currently sits on the Chief of the Defence Staff’s Strategic Advisory Panel – is among a battalion of military and war historians and researchers who will gather at Massey University’s Wellington campus for The Experience of a Lifetime – People, Personalities and Leaders in the First World War conference from August 22-24. Sir Hew, whose presentation is titled ‘Military Operations and National Policies 1914-1918′, wrote in a Guardian newspaper column last year that World War I commemorations should be more about education than remembrance following reports that six out of ten Brits said they didn’t understand what the war was about. He also stressed the need for Britain to coordinate its commemorative efforts more closely with its Commonwealth partners. He has published a number of books on the First World War, including; The First World War: Volume 1: To Arms (Oxford, 2001; The First World War: A New Illustrated History (Simon & Schuster, 2003); The First World War (Viking, 2004); and The First World War in Africa (Oxford, 2004).

Advocacy in the Social Sector: What leads to silencing? Sue Eliot and David Haigh.
Join us at 5pm this Wednesday for the eighth session in the Winter Lecture Series. This 45 minute session is followed by a Q&A and light refreshments.
NGOs and civil society organisations provide a link between the communities they serve and government. They provide an avenue for the voices of marginalised groups to be heard and help keep government accountable. This week, Sue Eliot and David Haigh, Lecturers at the Department of Social Practice will highlight the changes in the ability of NGOs to advocate for change and highlight ways in which they are being increasingly silenced. They will argue that this has occurred as a result of growing restrictions on them as a result of the enactment of neoliberal policies.

Dr Geoff Bertram – Piketty for Dummies: Thomas Piketty’s book "Capital in the 21st century" has become an international best-seller, unusual for a treatise on economics. Dr Geoff Bertram summarises it as follows – The economic logic of a capitalist market system with private wealth plus inheritance leads to a highly unequal, but stable, social order with a patrimonial rentier class at the top. Whether this social order is compatible with democracy depends on what a democratic society is prepared to tolerate. If the capitalist distributional equilibrium does not lie within the boundaries of democratic tolerance, one or the other has to give. Geoff will expand on this summary and explain why he thinks the work will earn Piketty a Nobel Prize. A Fabian Society Event. Register here.

A conference jointly hosted by Community Networks Aotearoa (formerly NZCOSS) and the NZ Council of Christian Social Services. Social justice is vitally important in Christchurch as it is rebuilding and redeveloping; it is equally important in all of our communities. It does not happen by accident but is the result of deliberate and inclusive decision-making. Inspirational speakers from Christchurch, elsewhere in New Zealand and Australia will share their experiences in working within communities to bring about self-determination, inclusion and empowerment for community members. This conference will strengthen participants’ commitment to social justice, it will inform them of how socially just communities have been developed and will inspire them to work towards this ideal in their work and communities. Lock your whiskey cabinet and grab your guns, because your friends and ours The Bacchanals are bringing an all-new, all-improved, all-singing-all-milking production of Once We Built A Tower to the South Island! We are SO EXCITED to be giving this play another outing, and SO EXCITED to be coming to some places that feature prominently in the story of how the 1935 Labour Government used the medical insurance scheme at the Waitaki Dam as their basis for creating a Welfare State that was once the envy of the world. Brought to you with the wonderful support of Emerging Artists Trust Wellington, Interislander and Coffee Supreme (and hopefully several more sponsors who can’t be confirmed at the time of this website update!), Once We Built A Tower will play a different town every night for a fortnight beginning Monday 25 August.
