Wednesday, August 27, 7.30pm,
A public meeting meeting with Jesson Prize winner Nicky Hagar will be held Wednesday 27th August, 7.30pm, at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall (Cnr Dominion Rd & Balmoral Rd). Chaired by Sir Edmund Thomas. Hosted by the Human Rights Foundation & Equal Justice Project.

Wednesday, August 27, 6pm, Te Manawa Art Gallery, 326 Main Street, Palmerston North

In collaboration with Massey University, Sir Hew Strachan will be speaking at Te Manawa on the 27th of August. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear a speaker of this caliber. One of Britain’s most respected military advisors, who recently criticised the British and United States government’s strategy in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, will share his views on the First World War in an international conference here in August. Sir Hew Strachan – Chichele Professor of the History of War at Oxford University who has advised the Coalition on its treatment of the Armed Forces and currently sits on the Chief of the Defence Staff’s Strategic Advisory Panel – is among a battalion of military and war historians and researchers who will gather at Massey University’s Wellington campus for The Experience of a Lifetime – People, Personalities and Leaders in the First World War conference from August 22-24. Sir Hew, whose presentation is titled ‘Military Operations and National Policies 1914-1918′, wrote in a Guardian newspaper column last year that World War I commemorations should be more about education than remembrance following reports that six out of ten Brits said they didn’t understand what the war was about. He also stressed the need for Britain to coordinate its commemorative efforts more closely with its Commonwealth partners. He has published a number of books on the First World War, including; The First World War: Volume 1: To Arms (Oxford, 2001; The First World War: A New Illustrated History (Simon & Schuster, 2003); The First World War (Viking, 2004); and The First World War in Africa (Oxford, 2004).

Advocacy in the Social Sector: What leads to silencing? Sue Eliot and David Haigh.
Join us at 5pm this Wednesday for the eighth session in the Winter Lecture Series. This 45 minute session is followed by a Q&A and light refreshments.
NGOs and civil society organisations provide a link between the communities they serve and government. They provide an avenue for the voices of marginalised groups to be heard and help keep government accountable. This week, Sue Eliot and David Haigh, Lecturers at the Department of Social Practice will highlight the changes in the ability of NGOs to advocate for change and highlight ways in which they are being increasingly silenced. They will argue that this has occurred as a result of growing restrictions on them as a result of the enactment of neoliberal policies.

Just letting you know that the Peace Place will be hosting an Introduction to NVC for Activists workshop on Saturday 30 August from 12.30-5pm. Details below: NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION FOR ACTIVISTS: Embody the Peace and Sustainability You Value. As someone who values social change, you want to see a world of peace, environmental sustainability, and care for all. You probably already value nonviolence and compassion, and. . . perhaps some of this fits?

 You sometimes feel very un-peaceful inside when advocating for peace in the world?

 You see people with other viewpoints as “other” and have a hard time relating to them?

 You are weary and want to find a way to stay inspired?

 You want to be both a loving and powerful agent of change?

Nonviolent Communication (NVC, developed by Marshall Rosenberg) can help you connect with what really matters, dialogue with people who disagree, access energy to fuel your social change work, and embody your values even more deeply. We will explore how to be both real and compassionate, stay focused on what you want, and come from the heart. This will be an introduction; no previous NVC experience required; those who have it will benefit from more tools and integration. We warmly welcome all!

Please pre-register for this workshop as we need a certain number of participants for the workshop to proceed. To register ring thepeaceplacenz

This August, we worked with addressing some of the immediate needs of over 500 people in Manger in just three-days at our annual benefit IMPACT. Our on-going advocacy, direct action, education and campaigns could not happen without the generous support of individuals, unions and groups who believe in our kappa. A group like ours is very difficult (if not impossible) to sustain out of government or philanthropic funding, so if you support our on-going work please come along and bring your friends, whanau and workmates along and enjoy this highly recommended NZ film with us! Seats are limited. Door sales will be available, however booking ahead strongly recommended. Please purchase your tickets through online deposit:

Dr Geoff Bertram – Piketty for Dummies: Thomas Piketty’s book "Capital in the 21st century" has become an international best-seller, unusual for a treatise on economics. Dr Geoff Bertram summarises it as follows – The economic logic of a capitalist market system with private wealth plus inheritance leads to a highly unequal, but stable, social order with a patrimonial rentier class at the top. Whether this social order is compatible with democracy depends on what a democratic society is prepared to tolerate. If the capitalist distributional equilibrium does not lie within the boundaries of democratic tolerance, one or the other has to give. Geoff will expand on this summary and explain why he thinks the work will earn Piketty a Nobel Prize. A Fabian Society Event. Register here.

Social justice in communities – What is it? How can we build it? How can we sustain it? A conference jointly hosted by Community Networks Aotearoa (formerly NZCOSS) and the NZ Council of Christian Social Services. Social justice is vitally important in Christchurch as it is rebuilding and redeveloping; it is equally important in all of our communities. It does not happen by accident but is the result of deliberate and inclusive decision-making. Inspirational speakers from Christchurch, elsewhere in New Zealand and Australia will share their experiences in working within communities to bring about self-determination, inclusion and empowerment for community members. This conference will strengthen participants’ commitment to social justice, it will inform them of how socially just communities have been developed and will inspire them to work towards this ideal in their work and communities. Registrations are open – register now!

We are SO EXCITED to be giving this play another outing, and SO EXCITED to be coming to some places that feature prominently in the story of how the 1935 Labour Government used the medical insurance scheme at the Waitaki Dam as their basis for creating a Welfare State that was once the envy of the world. Brought to you with the wonderful support of Emerging Artists Trust Wellington, Interislander and Coffee Supreme (and hopefully several more sponsors who can’t be confirmed at the time of this website update!), Once We Built A Tower will play a different town every night for a fortnight beginning Monday 25 August.

To that end, WE ARE NOT CHARGING ADMISSION. (You can & probably should give us koha or a donation because god knows how we’re going to make up the balance of the $25,000 this tour is costing us. And tell your rich friends that if they want to give money to a worthy cause, they should throw some pictures of the Queen our way!) We want you to come on down, see a free play, have a cup of tea (or maybe a wine/beer/cider/absinthe) with us after and let us sing you songs and tell you tales of NZ local history! This is the mightiest army of Bacchanals ever to take a show on the road (even though we’re leaving some formidable warriors at home): Alex Greig plays Gervan McMillan, Kirsty Bruce plays Ethel McMillan, Brianne Kerr plays Frances Nordmeyer, Michael Trigg plays Arnold Nordmeyer, Michael Joseph Ness plays Michael Joseph Savage, Jean Sergent plays the Medical Association, Joe Dekkers-Reihana plays Peter Fraser, Aidan Weekes plays Walter Nash, Hilary Penwarden plays the piano, Ellie Stewart plays the fiddle and David Lawrenceplays the banjo, guitar, mandolin and clarinet.
